What is Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) and what are its symptoms?

Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) is known to cause a variety of infections and inflammations that have the potential for a lifetime of health issues that are expensive to treat.

The Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) condition occurs when bacteria invades a premature infant’s (born BEFORE 37 weeks) intestinal wall which develops various infections and inflammations that carry with it the potential to destroy the intestinal tissue.

Nearly 9 out of 10 premature infants (born BEFORE 37 weeks) who get Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) can be affected. This condition mostly occurs in infants born before the 37th week of pregnancy, are fed through a tube in the stomach, and weigh less than 5 1/2 pounds at birth. (Source: Cleveland Clinic)

How is Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) the fault of baby formula manufacturers?

shutterstock_1728010210

Recent studies demonstrate that premature infants (born BEFORE 37 weeks) who are fed cow’s-milk based formulas or fortifiers are at significant risk of developing Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC).

Many of the baby formula manufacturers elected not to warn parents of these risks, which resulted in a sudden surge of thousands of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) cases nationwide.

In September of 2021, hundreds of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) claims were lobbied against two of the primary baby formula manufacturers Similac® and Enfamil®.

Also in November of 2021, similar brands of infant formulas and fortifiers were still associated with the dangerous Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) conditions affecting premature infants (born BEFORE 37 weeks).
